Speaking at the 35th UNESCO General Conference in Paris, President Wade thanked Mr Matsuura for his support to "la case des tout-petits" project, an initiative launched in Senegal with a view to playing host to two-year-old children in school facilities.
"I will like to express on this occasion Senegal's gratitude, and Africa's for that matter, for what you have done during your tour of duty to the benefit of our country," the Senegalese president said upon handing the medal to Mr Matsuura, who was dressed in African traditional costume.
After 10 years at the head of UNESCO, Japanese Matsuura will be succeeded by Bulgarian national Irina Bokova as Director-General.
