France: Déby optimistic about Compaore's Guinea mediation

Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno, has expressed confide nce in the mediation of his Burkinabe counterpart, Blaise Compaore, in the Guine an crisis but cautioned against a civil war in the country.

"I note that President Compaore is deeply involved in the mission the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has entrusted to him. I do hope he will quickly achieve results that will preserve social peace in Guinea," he told journalists at the end of an audience with the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, in Paris on Friday.

"West Africa does not need any new civil war. It is necessary to do everything to prevent Guinea from going that far," said the Chadian President who arrived in Paris last Wednesday for a private visit.

An extraordinary summit of ECOWAS is being held in Abuja, Nigeria, on the political crises in Guinea and Niger.

Guinean soldiers on 28 September brutally assaulted opposition supporters attending a rally at a stadium in Conakry killing 157 of them.
