France grants WFP 1.5 mln euros for food aid in DR Congo

Food delivery - The French ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Pierre Jacquemot, and the representative of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Kinshasa, Abdou Dieng, on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding, worth 1.5 million euros, in a bid to strengthen the UN agency's efforts in providing food to victims of armed conflicts in the country.

The funds will enable the WFP to provide 40,000 people, directly affected by the conflicts, with over 2,000 tonnes of food over three months.

Most of the victims are in the eastern part of the country.

"This is the third time that France has contributed to WFP activities this year. Its previous donations enabled the WFP to rescue over 100,000 displaced people in the eastern part of the country," Dieng said.

WFP operations in the DRC are mainly to improve access to food for displaced people and members of the families housing them.

Besides, WFP also works towards returning displaced people to their communities of origin.

DRC is the first nation in the world to benefit from the French donations.
