Guinea: UN Peacebuilding Commission deplores attack on Guinean President

New York, US - The UN Peacebuilding Commission on Thursday strongly condemned the unsuccessful attack on the residence of the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde, and called on all parties in the troubled West African country to refrain from further violence. Conde was reported to be safe and unharmed after the early Tuesday morning attack in the capital, Conakry, which has also been condemned by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday.

A brief statement by Ambassador Sylvie Lucas of Luxembourg, chair of the Peacebuilding Commission’s Guinea configuration, made available to PANA in New York, urged Guineans to respect the rule of law, democracy and national reconciliation.

It also noted that, 'the attack underlines the importance of dialogue for peace and stability in Guinea.'

PANA reported that Guinea is one of several countries which the UN Peacebuilding Commission is assisting in an effort to consolidate peace and prosperity after conflict.

Conde took office after he won last November’s run-off presidential election in the final stage of the interim government’s efforts to restore democracy after Captain Moussa Dadis Camara seized power in a coup in 2008, following the death of long-time president Lansana Conte.
