Embezzlement: Mauritania police quiz bankers

The Mauritanian police in charge of economic crimes, on Sunday questioned some bankers and businessmen over alleged "embezzlement" involving Sid'El Moctar Ould Nagi, former governor of the Mauritanian Central Bank (BCM), informed sources confirmed to PANA here on Monday.

Nagi was several times minister and ex-Ambassador to France during the rule of Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya.

Among the bankers being investigated are Chérif Ould Abdallah, owner of the Islamic Bank (BAMIS) and Mohamed Ould Bouamatou, CEO of Générale de Banque of Mauritania (GBM), cousin of President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

The former governor of the BCM is reportedly accused of embezzling about 12 billion ouguiyas (about US$ 45 million), according to the local press.

An executive of the opposition National Front for the Defence of Democracy (FNDD), Sid'El Moctar Ould Nagi, was arrested Wednesday afternoon while he was going back to his village, Aleg (250 kilometres south-east of Nouakchott), where he campaigned against the ruling party for the senatorial elections.
