DR Congo to celebrate indepedence in North Kivu

Festivities commemorating the 49th independence anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 30 June, will take place in Goma, the provincial capital of the North Kivu, according to President Joseph Kabila.

The decision to take the celebrations to the provincial capital was aimed at the liberation of this part of the DRC from the throes of war which had lasted over a decade, the Congolese Minister of Agriculture, Fishing and Breeding, Emmanuel Libendele Lubuna, announced here on Monday,

According to Lubuna, the decision is contained in a message from Kabila to the governors of provinces bordering the region of the Great Lakes (Rwanda, Burundi and DRC) who held an important meeting in Bukavu, the county town of the South Kivu province, last week.

Lubuna said the celebrations would begin with an agricultural fair in Goma from 24 June to 5 July with a view to highlighting Kabila's desire to achieve peace through food security.

All provinces in Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC are expected to participate in the fair "to consolidate cooperation and good neighbourliness and trade exchanges between the 'three enemies of yesterday' who have now now been reconciled".
