Congolese leader urges UN to end Gaza hostilities

Brazzaville, Congo - Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso Thursday called on the UN Security Council to "fully commit itself in order to end the armed confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip''.

"While condemning the use of force and deploring the human losses as well as the sufferings of innocent people, we urge the international community, mainly the UN Security Council, to fully commit to end the language of weapons," the Congolese leader said while receiving foreign diplomats based in the country.

He said any resolution of the crisis must be comprehensive, taking into account the right of both the Israeli and the Palestinian to exist.

The 13-day Israeli air and ground attacks on the Gaza has left over 700, including women and children, dead and triggered a serious humanitarian crisis in the densely-populated Strip.

Israel said the attacks were aimed at stopping the Hamas, which is ruling Gaza, from firing rockets into the southern part of the Jewish state.

A cease-fire initiative by Egypt and France is receiving 'serious considerations' in Israel, whose representatives arrived in Cairo Thursday for talks with Egyptian officials.
