The floods did not however cause any death and the most enormous material damage were recorded in Buterere, a working-class district on the West-North periphery of Bujumbura, where Sahinguvu paid an on-the-spot assessment visit.
Other areas of the city centre and south of Bujumbura were not spared by the flooding, unprecedented in the past 40 years, according to the Weather Service of Burundi Geographical Institute (IGBU).
IGBU urged the citizens to take precautions because torrential rains will continue to fall on the country until February 2010.
The Burundi senior minister promised aid from government to address the question of floods and disaster to be included in the agenda of next the Council of Ministers.
Sahinguvu condemned the ancient buildings along the five rivers which constitute a series of threat for the city of Bujumbura.
The other threat for the city comes from breaking waters in case of heavy rains, mountains which overhang and fall at Tanganyika lake.
