Burundi: Brussels to give Burundi 212 million euros

Belgium is to grant Burundi 212 million euros in the next two years to help the African nation to carry out some priority socio-economic programmes.

The grant was announced here Sunday evening by Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza, who has just returned from a four-day working visit to Belgium.

A cooperation pact for the release of the funds was signed by the parties during the visit.

Some 150 million euros out of the amount will go to the education, health and agriculture sectors, President Nkurunziza said.

Under the agreement, 10 million euros have been set aside to help Burundi to better negotiate its integration into the free trade East African Community (EAC), while 2 million euros will be used to pay Burundi's contribution to the Community of the Countries of the Great Lakes (CEPGL).

The remaining 50 million euros will be released after Burundi's 2010 general elections.
