Beninese NGO welcomes arrest warrant against Sudanese president

A Beninese coalition on Friday welcomed the international arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

In a statement issued in Cotonou, the Coalition said "the issuance of this arrest warrant clearly means that time has changed and impunity is no longer accepted.''

It said the ICC's decision was the right action and that nothing should be done to hamper the course of justice so that peace and protection of human dignity can prevail thro ughout the world.

The Coalition said under the international law, the Sudanese government and the rest of the international community must fully cooperate with the ICC.

The Hague-based ICC issued the arrest warrant on Wednesday on the request of Prosecutor Luiz Moreno-Ocampo, who indicted President al-Bashir over the crisis in Sudan's western Darfur region.

Since the crisis broke out in 2003, an estimated 300,000 people have been killed and over 2.7 million forced to flee their homes.
