Contending that some of the medicines are generic versions, with undeniable therapeutic properties, the organisation therefore demanded an analysis of the seized drugs to confirm whether or not they are fake.
Oxfam said the action of the Belgian Customs is depriving Africans of cheap medicines manufactured in India and China.
"The products, which are not fake medicines, are seized only because they come from India or China, and transit through Belgium to be sent to Africa. Thus, Oxfam considers that Africa is a victim of the war betw een the European pharmaceutical (firms) and the products made in India and China, whose prices can be afforded by Africans," the organisation said.
Recently, former French President Jacques Chirac organised a summit of African leaders in Cotonou, Benin, to launch a campaign against fake drugs made in Asia and sold in Africa.
But Oxfam believes that most of the products are in fact generic medicines with proven therapeutic effects.
