The ACP Ministers in charge of cooperation chose him Monday in preference to Cape Verde's Ambassador, Wahnon Ferreira, who is currently dean of the ACP Diplomatic Corps in Brussels.
Chambas, 57, has benefited from being the head of the ECOWAS Commission, a regional organisation whose membership includes Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, with over 120 million inhabitants.
The first task of the new Secretary General of the ACP Group, who takes over from Sir John Kaputin of Papau New Guinea (Pacific), will be to clear the negotiations for the conclusion of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) by the six regions of the group with the European Union.
Apart from the Caribbean, no other ACP region has signed a full EPA with EU.
A few ACP countries in Africa have signed with EU interim free trade consistent with the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), pending the possible conclusion of comprehensive EPAs.
