AU says Zimbabwe poll orderly, peaceful

The African Union (AU) said Thursday Zimbabwe's weekend polls were held in an orderly and peaceful manner, the latest in a series of observer missions to hail the elections.

The AU sent an observer mission to the elections, headed by former Sierra Leone leader Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.

In a statement, the mission said the elections were orderly, peacefully and professionally conducted.

The AU observer mission appealed for calm in the face of delays by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commision (ZEC) to release full results of Saturday's elections.

Results for the presidential and upper house of parliament polls are yet to be declared.

"The AU observer team would like to take the opportunity to commend the people of Zimbabwe for the manner in which they have comported themselves in relation to these elections and further appeal to them to continue to be patient (until) ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) finalises the release of the results," the AU mission said.
