African Kings plead for Union Government

Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire - The leader of the delegation of the Libyan traditional chiefs, Dr. Rafah El Madani, has stressed the need for Africa to establish a Union Government to help lift the continent from poverty, disease and hunger.

The Libyan official made his remarks at the weekend, as the meeting of kings, princes, dignitaries and traditional chiefs of Africa rounded off in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.

Participants at the meeting came from host Cote d'Ivoire, Libya, Senegal, Ghana, Chad, Uganda, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, DR Congo, Benin and South Africa.

In their communique, they urged African leaders to fulfil the aspirations of the peoples of the continent by deciding on the formation of an African federal government next January, during their ordinary summit in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

Ahead of the summit, they decided to organize meetings in the five regions of Africa to raise awareness on the importance of establishing a Union Government for the continent.

They also decided to meet the Libyan leader Mouammar Kadhafi, whom they bestowed with the title of 'King of kings', before the Addis Ababa summit.

Kadhafi is the chief proponent of the Union Government, believing it will help Africa to better address its myriad of problems and developmental challenges.

The traditional chiefs also sent a message to the African Union Commission, pleading for the formation of an African federal government at the Addis Ababa summit.
