Africa: AU wants cultural calendars of African countries harmonized

The African Union (AU) has given the African Culture Watc hdog (OCPA) the responsibility to co-ordinate the calendar of cultural events in Africa in a bid to avoid a clash, OCPA executive director, Lupwishi Mbuyamba, told PANA here Monday.

"At the AU initiative, we have listed all panafrican cultural institutions. The next stage will consist of harmonizing the calendar of festivals and other cultural events on the continent," Mbuyamba said.

According to the AU, scores of cultural events are organized all around the continent from January to December by governments and other institutions with no harmonization.

"We will work towards harmonizing cultural events to avoid simultaneous events. We will also advise states on how to evolve better cultural policies in Africa," Mbuyamba said.

He added that OCPA was expected to play a key role in helping African states culturally.

OCPA has its headquarters in Maputo, Mozambique.
