6 billion FCFA for sanitation in Brazzaville

Brazzaville, Congo - The Congolese government Monday released 6 billion F CFA to improve sanitation in the capital, Brazzaville, which is facing serious sanitation problems.

The Congolese minister of the Economy, Finance and Budget, Pacifique Issoïbeka, and the MP and Mayor of Brazzaville, Hugues Ngouélondélé, signed an agreement Monday facilitating the release of the money.

"We already have 6 billion FCFA which we can use in such a way that the city changes," Mr. Ngouélondélé said shortly after the agreement was signed.

The sanitation project, which will cover the next sixth months, will entail collection and recycling of household refuse in the entire city.

As the capital, Brazzaville had been built to host a population of 700,000 inhabitants. Today, it has about 1,400,000 inhabitants.

For almost two months now, the government has been executing a number of projects designed to enhance facilities in the city -- including good transportation system, good drinking water and adequate supply of electricity.

The developments, which will continue until 2009, are estimated to cost 128 billion FCFA.
