Sudan wants Congolese leader to mediate in Sudan/South Sudan crisis

Brazzaville, Congo - Nafie Ali Nafie, an envoy of the Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, Tuesday called on the Congolese leader, Denis Sassou Nguesso, to get involved in the resolution of the crisis between Khartoum and Juba, a Congolese presidential source told PANA here Wednesday.

Ali Nafie, the third most powerful official in the Sudanese government, was speaking shortly after delivering a message to the Congolese leader regarding negotiations to improve relations between Sudan and South Sudan.

'We are very confident that President Nguesso will help Sudan and South Sudan resolve their problems among themselves without outside intervention. We asked the Congolese president to get involved and help bring peace and security to his two counterparts,' said Ali Nafie.

¨President of Sudan Omar Al-Bashir and his counterpart from South Sudan Salva Kiir pledged at a recent meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to set a timetable for a resumed implementation of major agreements signed between the two countries. Implementation was suspended for three years.

The two neighboring countries are at daggers drawn for a number of issues, including the sharing of oil resources, the status of citizens of each State in the territory of the other, the future and delimitation of borders of the disputed border area of Abyei.

Responding to the call, the Congolese president promised to 'do his best to help the two Sudans achieve sustainable peace and security in the region'.
