Home Affairs Minister Kalombo Mwansa said the firearms surrender programme had not been very successful because some people were afraid to hand over guns in their possession.
Mwansa said some people were afraid of being questioned over the weapons, while others felt the K500,000 (about US$ 100) offered by the police was very little.
The minister said government was considering increasing the amount of money to entice more people to surrender their illegal weapons.
Mwansa spoke during the Government Forum programme on the state-run Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), radio two.
