New York, US - The UN Security Council has strongly condemned Saturday's attack on a UN/AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), which resulted in one death, and called on the Sudanese government to bring the perpetrators to justice.

PANA reported that one Nigerian peacekeeper was killed and three others were wounded, one of them seriously, while on patrol duty.

'The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the family of the peacekeeper killed in the attack, as well as to the Government of Nigeria,” Ambassador Baso Sangqu of South Africa, which holds the Council's presidency for January, said in a statement issued here Monday.

The Council called on the Government of Sudan to bring the perpetrators to justice, adding: 'There must be an end to impunity for those who attack peacekeepers.'

The Council also reiterated its full support for UNAMID and called on all parties in Darfur to cooperate with the mission.

PANA reports that fighting among rebels, militiamen and Sudanese government, as well as large-scale displacement, had plagued the Sudanese Darfur region since 2003.

UNAMID was deployed in 2008 and is tasked with protecting civilians, promoting an inclusive peace process and ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance across Darfur.
