Miss Universe 2011: Leila Lopes wins Miss Universe 2011

25-year-old Angolan Leila Lopes wins Miss Universe 2011 - Twenty-five-year-old Angolan business management student, Leila Lopes, Tuesday became Africa's first Miss Universe, toppling 97 other contestants in the 60th edition of the Miss Universe beauty contest in São Paulo, Brazil.

Lopes edged Olesya Stefanko of Ukraine to the second place and Brazilian Priscila Machado into third place.

The contest, organised by the US magnate Donald Trump, featured candidates aged between 18 and 27 years.

Speaking after the event, Lopes pledged to continue working with poor children and the elderly, especially in the “fight against HIV”.

Lopes is the second Africa to win a world beauty contest after Nigeria's Agbani Darego.

The then 18-year-old Darego, a computer science student, won the 51st Miss World pageant in Sun City, South Africa, 17 November, 2001.
