Nouakchott, Mauritania - The Rector of the University of Nouakchott, Mauritania, has decided to suspend classes until 2 May, following clashes on Wednesday and Thursday between members of two students' organizations, authoritative sources told PANA here Sunday. The clashes set the Islamic activists of the National Association of Students in Mauritania (UNEM) against the National Union of Students of Mauritania (NEMS), as campaigns for elections for the new students' bodies heat up.
In response to the decision by university officials, students also threatened to boycott exams at the end of the year, owing to the multiple disruptions that have occurred during the school year.
