Mali: Bamako's population to hit 4m in 2025

Bamako, Mali - Mali's national population agency has projected that Bamako, the Malian capital, with an annual growth rate of 6 percent, will have four million residents by 2025.

According to the last national census conducted in 2009, the population of the District of Bamako accounts for 13 per cent of the total population of Mali and 46.7 per cent of the country’s total urban population.

The city's population has grown very rapidly, from 89,000 in 1950 to 1.8 million in 2009.

The consequences of this rapid urbanization is the strong pressure on infrastructure and public facilities, and the difficulty in meeting the growing demand for social services, including housing, degradation of the environment and the living conditions.

Bamako is home to most of the infrastructure and industrial activities in the country.
