Nigeria: Gunmen attack top Nigerian traditional ruler

Lagos, Nigeria - One of Nigeria's most revered traditional rulers, Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano in the country's north, was attacked by unknown gunmen on Saturday while he was returning from a mosque in the city, according to local media reports.

The report said gunmen who had apparently laid an ambush on the Emir's convoy opened fire on it around Zoo Road in the city, killing his driver, orderly and several of the palace guards in the process.

But the Emir was said to have escaped unhurt and is now in his palace.

The police have yet to comment on the attack and no group has yet claimed responsibility for it.

Kano has been a hotbed of attacks by the Islamic sect Boko Haram, which has killed over 3,000 people in gun and bomb attacks since 2009 in the predominantly Muslim north.
