Libya: Top official outlines conditions for Libyan crisis settlement

Libyan crisis settlement - The Secretary of the Libyan General People's Committee, Dr. Baghdadi Mahmoudi, has outlined the conditions that have to be met before the Libyan crisis can be settled through dialogue between the two Libyan parties.

He said top on the list of conditions was the suspension of NATO’s air strikes to end the bloodshed.

Mahmoudi told a press conference here Thursday, after a meeting of the Libyan General People's Committee, that no military action could solve the Libyan crisis. 'Only dialogue can  lead to a peaceful solution.'

He said the Libyan government's stand on the resolution of the crisis stemmed from a position of strength, not weakness, adding that the authorities were capable of continuing with their resistance, although the choice of peace was preferable.

The Libyan official said the involvement of foreign parties in the talks had complicated the search for a peaceful solution and made it difficult politically, calling, however, on the international community, especially the United Nations, the African Union (AU) and other international organizations to cooperate to reach a solution satisfactory to all parties.

He said that all contacts were being made to initiate a political dialogue that could handle the Libyan crisis peacefully in accordance with the aspirations of all Libyans.
