Libya: US expresses concern over impact of Libyan crisis on terrorism

Impact of Libyan crisis - The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Johnnie Carson, has urged West African governments to adopt laws against terrorism.

Speaking at an international conference Monday in Dakar, the Senegalese capital, the US official said African states must also work, like Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, towards preventing terrorism and extremism from undermining democracy and the development of their countries.

Carson also recalled that Washington had set up programmes to combat terrorism in the world and it was important that all governments in the region be vigilant and cautious in relation to the extremist onslaughts perpetrated by terrorist organizations.

He expressed optimism that there would be no expansion of international terrorism in West Africa.

PANA reported that US, which rallied France and Great Britain to support the Libyan National Transitional Committee (NTC) in its armed rebellion against the regime of Mouammar Kadhafi, believes that following the proliferation of weapons stemming from the Libyan crisis, the arsenal of terrorist groups operating in the Sahel region would be strengthened.
