Transitional Council President confirms arrest of Libyan leader's son - President of the National Transition Council (NTC) Mustapha Abdeljelil has confirmed the arrest of Seif Ul-Islam Kadhafi, son of the Libyan leader Mouammar Kadhafi, as rebel fighters swept into Tripoli Sunday.
Speaking in a telephone interview with the Qatari satellite channel Al-Jazeera, Abdeljelil confirmed the entry of armed groups into Tripoli and the occupation of several neighborhoods in the capital, where sporadic fighting continued.
Seif Ul-Islam Kadhafi, the second son of Libyan leader and his eldest son from his second wife, led the Kadhafi Foundation for Charitable Associations (FKIAC), which played an important role in restoring the image of Libya, especially in West, through the release of many Western hostages.
Described as progressive, Seif Ul-Islam had been tipped to play a leading role in politics until the ongoing crisis broke out in Libya.
Meanwhile, Libyan government spokesman Ibrahim Moussa has disclosed that over 1,300 people were killed and 5,000 injured in Tripoli during Sunday after NATO carried out air raids on the Libyan capital.
He said NATO carried out the raids to provide air coverage to the rebels.
The Libyan official reiterated the call for an immediate cessation of military operations and for dialogue to find a solution to this crisis and save lives.
In a related development, images broadcast by Al-Jazeera showed scenes of celebrations in Tripoli, where residents in some neighborhoods took to the streets to express their joy after the rebels entered the city.
