Cotonou, Benin - The Benin police have seized a huge quantity of drugs in three containers at the port of Cotonou shipped from Pakistan, police sources told PANA on Wednesday.
The containers, tracked by the Beninese since November, arrived in Cotonou on Saturday and were impounded on Tuesday, police said. The drugs, which were in 586 parcels have been sent to the central office against illegal drug trafficking. The type of drug and quantity have not been revealed.
Illegal drug trafficking in Benin has continued despite sustained efforts by the government to halt the practice.
The government, with the support of the international community, has stepped up its war against illegal drug trafficking with significant results.
From January to July last year, Benin seized 1,124,770.84 grammes of drugs. This is made up of 1,045,972 grammes of cannabis, 64,014.62 grammes of cocaine, 1,934.94 grammes of heroin, 12,844.16 grammes of methamphetamine and 5.120 grammes of tramadol.
