Trade: West Darfur traders protest tax hike

Traders in the Geneina market in Sudan's West Darfur State on Sunday began a strike to protest a 350% hike in taxes imposed by the State’s Ministry of Finance in the 2014 budget, according to Khartoum newspaper Al-Ayam.

The paper quoted the Deputy Chairman of the Geneina Chamber of Commerce, Ali Abdul Kerim, as saying the tax on one truck load of goods was raised from 2,700 Sudanese pounds (about US$450) in 2013 to 7,400 Sudanese pounds (US$1,230) in 2014.

He said the strike was called to also protest the arrest of the Chairman of the Chamber, Tigani  Yusuf, and the clearance officer, Anwar Ishaq, for submitting to the authorities a memorandum protesting the tax hike.
Kerim said the strike would end only after the taxes were restored to the 2013 rates and their arrested leaders released.
