Agriculture: 'Cotton production rising in Togo'

Cotton production Togo - Cotton production in Togo, in tatters over the past four years, has increased by 161.3% in 2012, official sources told PANA Wednesday in Lome.

According to the sources, figures made available showed that production, which stood at 32,000 tonnes four years ago, rose to 118,000 tonnes in 2012 or an increase of 161,3%.

Officials indicate that the increase is due to reforms in that sector which, they said, encouraged investors to return to Togo.

They said that in 2013, the government plans to take cotton production to 125,374 tonnes and to 156,717 tonnes in 2014.

The government wants to maintain the current growth rate with a view to hitting 172,389 tonnes in 2015.

'The aim is to have a relative growth of 14.2% over the period 2013-2017,' officials said.
