2014 Mavericks Invitational big-wave surfing competition in California, U: South Africa’s Grant Baker on Friday won the 2014 Mavericks Invitational big-wave surfing competition in California, US. The event, which attracted thousands of spectators and was broadcast around the world, saw massive waves as high as 40 feet in Half Moon Bay.

Baker, a 40-year-old from Durban who also won the event in 2006, took the US$50,000 first prize thanks to two rides early in the six-man final heat which the judges rated nearly perfect.

None of the other five surfers - Shane Dorian (Hawaii), Ryan Augenstein (Santa Cruz), Tyler Fox (Santa Cruz), Greg Long (San Clemente) and Anthony Tashnick (Santa Cruz) – was able to match him.

Mavericks is rated as one of the world's most challenging surfing breaks and it has claimed the lives of several surfers, including two professional surfers – Mark Foo of Northern California in 1994 and Hawaiian Sion Milosky in 2011.
