Security: 643 people killed in Libya in 2013

Tripoli, Libya - A total of 643 people were killed in Libya by criminal gangs in 2013, according to a report by the interior committee of the Libya's General National Congress (Parliament) issued here Thursday.

The report notes that the number of violent crimes committed in the north African nation increased in 2013, compared to the preceding year, as the country continues to wallow in worsening insecurity in the wake of the 2011 uprising that toppled the Mouammar Khadafi regime.

The committee attributed the growing criminal activities, many of which are carried out in broad daylight, to the proliferation of arms and ammunition in the country.

It said that in the absence of an effective policing of the country, criminal activities have become a way to earn a living for many hoodlums.
