Nomination kicks off ahead of Gambia's local government election - Gambia's Independent Electoral Commission Thursday began receiving nomination papers from candidates contesting in the West African nation's local government election, slated for April, PANA reported, citing a statement from the electoral body.
The Commission indicated that the nomination of candidates would be held from 14-16 March.
It was further revealed that 14 March is set aside for the candidates running on the ticket of the ruling party, the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), while independent and opposition candidates will file their nomination papers in the remaining days.
PANA learnt, however, from reliable sources that most of the opposition parties have planned to boycott the local government election.
Gambia's opposition parties have long argued that the country needs to have electoral reform geared towards ensuring 'level-playing field' for all candidates.
