Detained Mauritanian anti-slavery activists freed

Nouakchott, Mauritania - The nine activists working for a Mauritanian anti-slavery NGO Initiative for the resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA) were released from detention Wednesday night, the organisation has announced.

The activists were arrested last Saturday in the city of Kaédi, 420 kilometres Southeast of the capital, Nouakchott.

It was not clear why they were arrested.

While hailing the release, IRA expressed regret that the activists were detained for several days, saying they appeared 'depressed and tired due to the hunger strike they embarked upon, but that they are generally in good health.'
