Journalists in Burkina Faso - The Association of journalists in Burkina Faso (AJB) on Wednesday condemned the arrest of Malian journalist Boukary Daou and demanded his release.
According to a news release issued in Ouagadougou, AJB is demanding the unconditional release of Daou, the editorial director of private newspaper Le Républicain, as he only performed his duties of informing the population by publishing an 'open letter whose content is beyond doubt'.
Daou was arrested by men believed to be from the state security on 6 March at the paper's headquarters.
The 'open letter by soldiers' claimed juicy perks had been granted to Captain Amadou Haya Sanogo, the perpetrator of the coup which overthrew of General Amadou Toumani Touré.
According to the news release, Malian authorities cannot hide behind 'the war against Islamists and narcotics traffickers' and 'the state of emergency' to deprive Malians of their right to be informed.
