Uchenna Kanu increased the tally for Nigeria in the 63rd minute before Fan Yuqiu struck a minute later to pull one back for the Chinese.
Match statistics indicated that Nigeria dominated the encounter with 20 shots on goal and six corner kicks, against China's five shots on goal and three corner kicks.
Africa's two other representatives at the tournament, Ghana and Zambia, played their opening matches on Saturday, with Ghana winning and Zambia losing.
