2014 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica - Ghana hammered North Korea 2-0 Saturday in a Group A opening match at the 2014 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica.
A goal in each half (scored by Jane Ayieyam in the 16th minute and Sandra Owusu Ansah in the 50th) lifted the resilient Ghanaian queens to a 2-0 win over 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finalist North Korea for a bright start to their Group B campaign at the Liberia Estadio Edgardo Baltodano Briceño stadium.
It was Ayieyam's fifth goal in her sixth Under-17 World Cup match.
The other African team on parade Saturday, Zambia, was not that lucky as it was beaten 2-0 by Italy in their Group A match in San Jose.
Italy scored on either side of the half-time break.
Player of the match Annamaria Serturini, who had started the match on the bench, was the heroine, scoring both goals in the first match at the Costa Rican National Stadium in the capital.
In other results of the day, Venezuela whitewashed the host 3-0 in Group A while Germany came from behind to draw 2-2 with Canada.
In continuation of the tournament Sunday, Nigeria will meet China in Group D at Alajuela, while Mexico plays against Colombia in the same group.
Group C fixtures Sunday are New Zealand vs Paraguay and Spain vs Japan.
