Washington, DC, US - The US has welcomed the recently-signed technical pact between Sudan and South Sudan on the implementation of the Agreement on Security Arrangements, signed by the Presidents of the two countries 27 Sept. 2012.
The Implementation Modalities for Security Agreements Pact outlines a set of actions, set to begin 10 March, the unconditional withdrawal of all forces to their side of the Safe Demilitarized Border Zone (SDBZ) and the deployment of the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism (JBVMM), with logistical support and logistical protection provided by the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
In a statement by the State Department, the US urged the parties to begin the immediate implementation of all nine 27 Sept. Cooperation Agreements, and that each of the agreements should be implemented independently without conditions or delay.
'We commend the parties, the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel and the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei for their continued efforts to implement the African Union Roadmap and UN Security Council Resolution 2046,' the statement said.
