Belle-Vue, Mauritius - Several thousand Mauritians witnessed on Wednesday afternoon the official ceremony marking the 46th anniversary of the independence of the island at Anjalay Stadium, Belle-Vue, northern Mauritius.
Several important political personalities of the country, including President Rajeshwur Purryag and Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, as well as the Malaysian International Trade and Industry Minister, Sri Mustapa Mohammad, were present.
Elements from the different departments of the Mauritian Police Force and the Indian Navy took part in the rally to mark the official ceremony. There were also demonstrations from police dogs, helicopters and planes.
Mauritius in south-west Indian Ocean obtained its independence from Britain on 12 March 1968.
