Lusaka, Zambia - Twelve people were confirmed dead while many others sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident involving a minibus and a truck and trailer along the Kitwe-Ndola road, in Zambia's northern copperbelt province, Tuesday.
According to local media reports Wednesday, the minibus with passengers on board collided head on with the truck laden with bags of mealie meal.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Joyce Kasosa and Kitwe Central Hospital spokesperson Grey Chishimba both confirmed the fatal accident.
“So far, 12 people have been confirmed dead and we suspect there could be others still trapped in the vehicle wreckage,” Kasosa said.
She said the accident happened when the driver of the truck tried to avoid a pothole but in the process collided head on with the passenger minibus.
