Gambian journalist, Baboucarr Ceesay, detained

Banjul, Gambia - Mr. Baboucarr Ceesay, vice president of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), has been arrested and detained by the Gambian National Intelligence Agency, his wife, Darboe, confirmed to PANA Saturday.


Ceesay, also a correspondent for the Nairobi-based regional media house, the Nation, was picked up by a group of plain clothed National Intelligence Agency officers outside his Ceesay-Kunda home on Friday, Mrs Cessay said.

Mrs. Ceesay said her husband had been the target of secret police officers for about two weeks, saying that his whereabouts remain unclear.

Baboucarr Ceesay and Abubacarr Saidykhan, a freelance journalist, were arrested in August  2012 and detained. On 10 September, 2012, they were charged to court for applying to organize a peaceful demonstration against the execution of nine death-row inmates in the  Gambia.
