Togo prepares for parliamentary, local government elections

The Togolese National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) will commence the registration of voters on 15 March, 2013, for the upcoming parliamentary and local government elections, PANA reported Saturday, quoting a CENI source.

The source said the registration exercise, which had been postponed several times, will end on 15 April.

It said that CENI had mobilized 2,200 biometric kits, generators and several agents in preparation for the polls for which no date has been set 'because of technical reasons”.

Previously scheduled for 24 March, the elections will be held after the registration exercise and dialogue between the various stakeholders.

Togolese opposition is demanding institutional and constitutional reforms before the polls.

Meanwhile, the European Union (EU), Togo’s main political partner, has refused to finance the polls, citing Togo's refusal to carry out its recommendations on the polls.
