Uhuru Kenyatta Kenya's 4th president

Uhuru Kenyatta officially named Kenya's 4th president - Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's first President, Jomo Kenyatta, was declared Kenya's fourth President on Saturday, handing out the country's biggest electoral defeat to popular politician Raila Odinga.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Issack Hassan, declared Kenyatta winner of the 4 March polls, saying that Kenyata received more than 50.07% of the 12.3 million votes cast to clinch the presidency.

Kenyatta's 6,173,433 votes landed him a clear first-round win against Odinga's 5,340,546 votes gathered from Western Kenya, the Coast and parts of Eastern province.

'There can be victory without victims,' Hassan said before declaring Kenyatta the President in an apparent plea to Odinga to concede defeat.

Kenyatta, born to the royalty of the Kenyan politics, teamed up with William Ruto, the son of a farmer in the Rift Valley province, to create what would be Kenya's most lethal electoral defeat.

Kenyatta was driven to the venue under tight security and received his certificate for the Presidency at a brief ceremony flanked by his wife, Margaret, and mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

Hassan praised the conduct of the elections, stating: 'Together, we have done our country proud.'

'We had a date with history, a rendezvous...no electoral body within the region has done what we did in one day. We faced technical challenges which raised doubts over our preparedness,' Hassan said.

IEBC Chief Executive, James Oswago, said elections were conducted in a free and fair manner and was based on lessons learnt.

Kenyatta, educated in the US from where he graduated with a degree in politics and economics, has pledged to introduce free medical care at all public healthcare centres.

The newly-elected leader will be sworn in 26 March when all the legal challenges that might arise after the election results are dealt with.

The other candidates in the race were Musalia Mudavadi, who came third in the polls with 483,981 votes, Peter Kenneth, who garnered 72,786 votes and Mohamed Dida, who got 52,848. Paul Muite received 12,580 votes and Martha Karua, received over 40,000 votes.
