Radio France International’s correspondent in Burundi released

Bujumbura, Burundi - The Radio France International (RFI) correspondent in Burundi, Hassan Ruvakuki, was released Wednesday after one year in detention over charges of “involvement in terror activities”, judiciary sources told PANA here.

He was released on health grounds, the sources said.

The journalist was accused of involvement in terror activities after attending a meeting in Tanzania which was aimed at founding a rebel movement to 'topple' the Burundi government.

He was first sentenced to life imprisonment but the term was reduced to three years on appeal.
