The International Olympic Committee sends gold medal won by Nigerian relay team at Syney Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has sent the gold medal won by Nigeria’s 4x400 metres relay team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).

The Nigerian team, which comprises Enefiok Udo-Obong, Clement Chukwu, Jude Monye, late Sunday Bada and Ndula Awazie (reserve), was upgraded from silver to gold medallist following the disqualification of the US team, after one its runners - the late Antonio Pettigrew - admitted to drug use at the games.

A letter from the IOC to the NOC, signed by IOC President Jacques Rogge, read: 'I am pleased to send you this Olympic Gold for Mr Enefiok Udo-Obong, who was part of your men’s 4x400m now placed first in the athletics men’s 4x400 metres relay event  at the Games of the XXV11 Olympiad, Sydney 2000.'

The medal for the remaining runners have yet to be sent because they have not returned their silver medals, as required. Only Udo-Obong has returned his.
