Lagos, Nigeria - Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State in South-east Nigeria, where a top police boss was killed by gunmen over the weekend, has offered 10 million naira (US$65,000) for anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the killers.
“This is most embarrassing not just to the police, but to the nation. For a senior police officer to be killed in such a manner, to me is quite unfortunate and the state government has decided to take a position on this in order to show the seriousness of what has happened,' the local media Tuesday quoted the governor to have said.
The Police Commissioner for central Kwara State, Mr. Chinwile Asadu, was killed by unknown gunmen while visiting his home state of Enugu over the weekend.
The killing, a few months before Mr. Asadu's retirement, has attracted widespread comments from individuals and groups, who said it was indicative of the worsening insecurity in the country, where armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom and other violent crimes have been on the rise.
The police hierarchy have vowed to apprehend the killers and bring them to justice.
