At least 173 cases of human rights violations-DR Congo

Kinshasa, DR Congo - At least 173 cases of human rights violations were registered by the UN Joint Office of Human Rights in January 2014 in DR Congo, Scott Campbell, Head of the Joint Office, said on Wednesday.

The UN office said the armed forces of DR Congo (FARDC), the national police and armed groups fighters were the main perpetrators of these violations, and they were responsible for  36%, 27% and 28% respectively of the total number of human rights violations registered during the month.

The UN noted that the most affected provinces during the period were North-Kivu and the Eastern province, and expressed concern about the continuation of these violations.

The UN office carries out a close supervision of the human rights situation in DR Congo and proceeds to analyse tendencies relating to the human rights situation in the country.
