Media coverage of Quran's desecration deplored-Mauritania

Nouakchott, Mauritania - The Mauritanian High Authority of the Press and the Audiovisual (HAPA) has deplored the coverage, by several private television networks, of the recent events linked to the desecration of the Quran in a mosque in Nouakchott, the Mauritaian capital.

In a statement, published Wednesday, the authority slammed what it called severe  dereliction of duty and breach of the code of ethics, as well as the priority given to sensationalism.

The TV networks are accused of fuelling the incident by covering fully the different stages of the funeral of a young man who died during the demonstrations over the incident.

The young man was killed while 15 others were wounded in the demonstrations.
