Algeria: No EU observers for April Algerian presidential polls

Brussels, Belgium - The European Union (EU) will not deploy observers  to oversee the presidential elections in Algeria, scheduled for April and in which outgoing President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika has announced his intention to run for a fourth term, according to an EU statement, obtanied by PANA Wednesday.

EU said it had recently received the invitation from the Algerian government to monitor the polls but said it could not oversee the polls unless the Algerian authorities accept to fully implement the recommendations issued at the end of a 2012 EU Election Mission in the country during the legislative elections.

The EU election Mission said it had no access to the central voters' list, a situation which prevented it from validating the outcome of the polls.

However, EU MPs could take the trip to Algeria individually as mere witnesses.

Meanwhile, the candidacy of President Bouteflika for a fourth term has sparked controversy in Algeria.
