Pretoria, South Africa - The first witness at the Oscar Pistorius murder trial which started Monday has told the North Gauteng High Court that she heard 'bloodcurdling' screams from a woman, moments before a volley of gunfire.
The testimony came after the Paralympian pleaded not guilty to murdering his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Testifying through an interpreter, Michelle Burger, who speaks Afrikaans, said she was woken in the early hours of Valentines Day – 14 Feb. – last year by a woman screaming and shouting for help in the neighbouring security estate.
'She screamed terribly and she yelled for help. Then I also heard a man screaming for help. Three times he yelled for help,' Burger said.
She described the moment Steenkamp was fatally wounded: “I heard four shots. Four gunshots ... bang, bang, bang, bang.”
The witness, who is a university lecturer, is expected to continue with her testimony later in the day.
