Journalist arrested for publishing 'false information' in Gambia

Press/Media - Musa Sheriff, Publisher and Editor of The Gambian-based The Voice newspaper, was Monday arrested by the Gambian police for allegedly publishing false information, sources close to the journalist told PANA.

Sheriff, who is also the Pan African News Agency (PANA) stringer in The Gambia, was picked up from his office in Serrekunda and taken to a police station in Sanyang, a coastal village located some 35km south of Banjul, Gambia's capital.

The correspondent's arrest is said to have been linked to a story he published in his newspaper last month, claiming that 19 young supporters of the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC) party had defected to the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

PANA learnt that The Gambian police have yet to charge Sheriff to court or allow him to be bailed.
